JBAB finance competes in Iron Ledger

JOINT BASE ANACOSTIA-BOLLING, Washington -- U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 11th Comptroller Squadron participated in Iron Ledger, a deployment readiness assessment designed to advance Air Force financial management, at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington, D.C., Oct. 27-29, 2026.

Iron Ledger tests finance Airmen's physical capabilities, teamwork and adaptability beyond the office. The assessment prepares Airmen to make rapid decisions and support operations in complex environments.

“In the Air Force right now, and DOW-wide, fitness is a priority,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jasmine Allen, senior enlisted leader with the 11th CPTS. “As long as you stay ready, you don’t have to worry about getting ready.”

During the three-day event, Airmen completed physical challenges, including a combat fitness test, and responded to simulated Air Force financial requirements. Iron Ledger places finance managers in the middle of realistic combat emergencies.

Allen noted that Master Sgt. Patrick Townsend, the finance budget flight chief assigned to the 11th CPTS, experienced firsthand the real-world conditions the exercise simulates during his recent deployment in support of Operation Epic Fury.

“Operations for cash disbursements stopped, and he had to go out to the front lines,” Allen said. “That goes to show when duty calls, we have to show up and be multi-capable Airmen.”

The readiness obstacles included contact drills, evacuation procedures and tactical equipment movement under simulated fire. Townsend, drawing on his real-world deployment experience, encouraged his teammates as they navigated challenges designed to test individual and team capabilities.

“There are times where we have to operate outside of the wire…being able to help each other and our partners is very important for our day-to-day jobs,” said Townsend. “There were times where I was needed outside of the office, outside of my normal finance duties, to help complete a mission.”

The 11th CPTS is currently competing at the Air Force District of Washington command level. If the squadron advances, it will represent the region at the Air Force level.

The Air Force emphasizes that Airmen across all career fields must remain physically capable of supporting the mission. Iron Ledger validates that finance managers perform effectively under pressure and can successfully step into the role of a warfighter.
